A "roller coaster ride", that's how I would describe today.
Noticed white milk patches on Gerald's tongue, thought it was milk residue.
Confinement lady tried to wipe it but it couldn't come off, so she said we should bring him to the doc. Called Wai Sum and she gave me directions the the Paediatrician's Clinic. Called them before I went and they waited for us.
Dr Lum, he is a "no nonsense" old doc. Mrs Lam was very kind and helpful while Dr Lam was very straight forward and may come across as rude (to a stranger). He was rough when speaking to the confinement lady who went with me. I pity her. He probably just never like the traditional way of taking care of baby, saying "old fashioned".
I mean yea, old fashion but she did the right thing, what she knows best. But probably also due to her talking too much la.
Gerald got infected with THRUSH (i think I spell this right), which is a fungal infection common amongst newborn from 3 - 6 weeks. It is mostly due to non-hygenic bottle teats and mouth that is not rinse after each feed.
To prevent :
# Wash teats with salt
# Thoroughly clean bottle with brush
# Boil all bottles, teats and other feeding equipment in boiling water for 5 - 10min. Drained and leave it to dry the pot. Use toggle to retrieve. Wash hand before handling any of the equipment.
# Also, feed baby some water after each feed to rinse out the milk residue. Any residue left in the mouth is a breeding ground for the yeast.
As Gerald has the yeast in his tummy and it came out when he passed motion. We used baby wipes to clean him everytime he passed motion and most probably because of the, again, residue, his thigh got infected as well.
Advice :
# wash baby's little butt everytime after he passed motion.
# try not to use wipes unless necessary
Medicine given :
# Miconazole Cream & Gel
I feel so guilty for allowing this to happen.
To all mom to be, please read and take note of whatever that you read in your preganancy book to better prepare yourself.
